Where do you want to live in Philadelphia?  Do you want easy access to the trains, to the buses, the express way, or maybe you just want access to Philadelphia cheese steaks!  Anyway you look at it; there are plenty of options to consider.  There is a wide range of cultural and social differences in the neighborhoods of Philadelphia; here are some choices and suggestions.

Safety and a low crime rate are usually the first choice of anyone when moving to an area.  The Roxborough section of Philadelphia has the lowest crime rate in the city.  It is an old neighborhood, with many generational families, however, with its proximity to Manayunk (this article will explain about Manayunk next), it (Roxborough) also attracts thousands of young professionals.  Roxborough is bordered by Fairmount Park (the largest park in the city and subsequently the largest urban park in the country), so in Roxborough there is plenty of out door related activities as well as a revitalized safe community.

The neighbor to the south of Roxborough is Manayunk.  This area is known for its Main Street which is filled with shops, restaurants, and bars.  This area has a vibrant nightlife and from this it attracts many young people. 

South Philadelphia is an interesting area.  It has the Italian Market, two areas that have many Asian restaurants and shops, also home to the world famous cheese steak restaurants (Pat’s and it competitor Geno’s). 

Center City is the business district; it is the center of commerce and the middle of the city.  It is obviously more expensive than everywhere else, but being in the center of the city does have its perks.

Graduate Hospital area is more of an up and coming area.  It is close to center city and has all the connections to the center, but it is expensive and unsafe in some areas.  Unfortunately, it is not completely renovated or revitalized, bur real estate speculators have driven the prices up and it reflects in the house prices.

Rittenhouse and Rittenhouse Square is one of the most prestigious areas of the city.  The park is world famous for its history and its beauty, but with this comes very high prices.  The area is safe and convenient to everything needed in the city, but this all will come with a high price.  Rittenhouse has a small park that is bordered by very nice restaurants, but be prepared to spend money on parking and more money on food or anything else you want to purchase.  But again at the same time, you will be centrally located to all the city has to offer.

Other areas include Old City, which is very historic and also very pricey.  Old City has many amenities including a nightlife, but again it is high-priced and usually not worth the effort or money when comparing places to live.

Northern Liberties is still an up and coming area.  Again real estate speculators have driven prices beyond reason and it has not made the area appealing to the frugal buyer (In other words the bargain real estate shopper) .  Also there is a safety concern in this area because it is close to undesirable areas.

This gives you a brief description of some areas of the city.  From this you can learn more about neighborhoods and make more of an informed decision.  Remember to ask your realtor about any area you want to live in; a good realtor will know everything about the city.  Good luck and make sure you do research on the neighborhood that interests you.
